Many of you who read my blog on a regular basis probably got directed here originally by a link in the signature of my posts on Chowhound.com’s “South” message board. If you weren’t and are unfamiliar with Chowhound, I really recommend checking it out; there are always a few active threads on Charleston/the Lowcountry in general.
Anyhow, on a thread that I started a couple weeks ago after writing my Home Team BBQ review, one poster who vehemently disagreed with me made a really good suggestion. He recommended I head up King Street on a Saturday around noon, because there are several guys who park pull behind smokers and sell ribs and chicken right out of the back of their trucks.
So, this past Saturday, my girlfriend and I made the trek up King Street, past Spring, past Huger, past Grove, and ended up just south of Romney (near the Great Wall Express). We followed our noses over to the smoker and were each handed a free rib to sample while we decided what to get. I went with the half rack ($14 for 8 big ribs) and Sarah got the rib “sandwich” ($7 for 4 ribs). The ribs are served with a great tangy mustard sauce. The meat was tender and smokey, pulled out of the smoker just for us. The proprietor of this particular operation was a friendly gentleman named Lawrence Frazier, “The Rib Man.”
I highly recommend that every Charleston local pry themselves away from the farmer’s market an hour early one Saturday and try some of this great local barbecue.

I highly recommend this place too. I’m not even a big rib person but these were great. I really liked the homemade sauce and the Rib Man was really nice.
